Voting underway for bypolls to two seats in UP Legislative Council in Lucknow

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Finance Minister Suresh Khanna were among those who voted in the morning, an official at the Assembly Secretariat said.

Voting began in Lucknow on Monday for the bypolls to two vacant seats in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, for which both the BJP and the Samajwadi Party had fielded candidates.

The polling began at 9 am and will continue till 4 pm. The counting of votes will start from 5 pm. The results are likely to be declared by evening. On the basis of its numerical strength in the Legislative Assembly, the BJP is comfortably in a position to secure victory for both its candidates.

The resignation of Laxman Acharya and the death of Banwari Lal Dohra necessitated by-elections in two seats. The tenure of Acharya, who was appointed as the Governor of Sikkim, was to end in January 2027, while Dohre’s tenure was to end in July 2028. The BJP has fielded Manvendra Singh and Padamsen Chowdhary while Ram Jatan Rajbhar and Ramkaran Nirmal are contesting for the Samajwadi Party. Team.

The notification for the bypoll was issued on May 11 with May 18 being the last day for filing nominations. Only members of the Legislative Assembly are eligible to vote in Legislative Council elections.

The BJP has 255 MLAs in the 403-member assembly, while allies Apna Dal (Sonelal) have 13 and Nishad Party six. Samajwadi Party has 109 MLAs and its ally Rashtriya Lok Dal has nine MLAs. Suheldev has six MLAs from the Bharatiya Samaj Party, two each from the Congress and the Jansatta Dal (Democratic) and one from the Bahujan Samaj Party.
