Water cut in PMC areas every Thursday from May 18 – Times of India

Pune: From May 18, residents of Pune municipal areas will not get water on Thursdays.
In view of the possible impact of El Nino on monsoon this year, the civic body administration on Tuesday decided to cut the supply once a week as a precautionary measure.
“The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure after the weather forecast and the possible impact of El-Nino on the monsoon. The water saved from these cuts will be used for consumption if the monsoon is delayed,” said Anirudh Pawaskar, head of the water supply department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
Pawaskar said that if this practice is followed for a month, around 0.25 TMC of water would be saved. “The water saved will be enough for the city’s consumption for about a week. The state government has issued instructions to take steps and save water based on the forecast of El Nino.
PMC officials said that the civic administration has been receiving several complaints regarding its cascading effects water cut And to deal with the impact, options like installation of air valves on pipelines will be explored.
“I wonder, how is water supply managed in other cities? Why is there a water cut every year in a city like Pune?” Sujata Malik, a resident of Nagar Road area, asked.
Ameya Kale, a resident of Shivajinagar, said that after a day’s cut, the supply did not start at full capacity. “The pressure persists for at least two days. The situation forces residents to call water tankers to meet the demand,” Kale said.
Vikram Gaikwad, a resident of Narhe, said that the availability of water in the coastal areas is already inadequate. “The water cut will make the situation more challenging. The administration should ensure that water supply is restored to full capacity on Friday,” he said.
Vivek Velankar of the civic group Aware Citizen Manch said the announcement of water cut was a result of mismanagement. “Despite the water level reaching full capacity in all the four dams in the last monsoon, cuts have been announced. There is no balance in water supply to city and rural areas. Why should the city face water cuts when PMC is there?” have to do?” Already supplying treated water to rural areas. We suspect that the tankers’ lobby is benefiting from the cut.”
NCP’s city unit president Prashant Jagtap blamed the state government for the situation. “In the absence of the general body, it is the responsibility of the state government to deal with the situation. However, the government has failed to do so.”
BJP leader Ganesh Bidkar said, ‘Those who rule the cities should make plans as part of their responsibility. Precautionary measures are necessary in case of delayed rains. Hence, the cut is justified,” he said.
The collective water stock in the four dams was 9.78 TMC on Tuesday. The dams are releasing water for summer crops, which will continue for another month.
