Water Woes Of Coimbatore Will End Soon, Says Nehru | Coimbatore News – Times of India

Coimbatore: Stating that the Tamil Nadu government was in constant dialogue with neighbouring Kerala to resolve the row over Siruvani dam, municipal administration minister K N Nehru has said the authorities were taking multiple steps to augment drinking water supply to Coimbatore.
Speaking to reporters in the city on Wednesday, Nehru said that though Coimbatore required 298 million litres of water per day (MLD), the city was getting only 214 mld. “Out of 98 mld, we are supposed to get from Siruvani dam, only 68 mld is being supplied,” Nehru noted.
Since the dam is located within Kerala, the Tamil Nadu government was holding talks with the counterparts in the neighbouring state to iron out the issue and enable better storage of water, which would result in better supply to Coimbatore, he said.
Water from Pillur and Aliyar dams too are in short supply, he said.
He said the Pillur II project was nearing completion. Only 1.5km of pipeline laying work is remaining, which will be completed by the month end. “In October first week, the city would get an additional 178 mld of drinking water from the Pillur II project. So, residents would get drinking water daily,’’ he said.
On the bad roads in the city, Nehru said that fund has been allocated for relaying or repairing 680km of roads in Coimbatore. “Road works are being carried out across the city. If there are more bad roads, we will relay them too,” he said.
On the renaming of India as Bharat, Nehru said it doesn’t matter. “Irrespective of the name change, we would continue to address the Centre as Union government only,” he said.
Earlier, flanked by state electricity minister S Muthusamy, Nehru gave away welfare assistance to beneficiaries of various schemes. He also laid the foundation stone for various projects worth ₹67 crore in the presence of collector Kranthi Kumar Pati, mayor Kalpana Anandkumar and corporation commissioner M Prathap.
