Panchayat elections are to be held in West Bengal on 8 July. Before voting, violence is taking place in many places in the state. Regarding which the Calcutta High Court had given instructions to deploy central security forces in all the districts of the state.

The court had said that the State Election Commission would have to request the Center for central forces within 48 hours. But the state government has filed a review petition against the court’s decision.

Meanwhile, on Friday, West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose reached Bhangar in South 24 Parganas, where violence has been going on for the last several days.

On June 15, a division bench of Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Shivaganaman and Justice Uday Kumar passed the order regarding the deployment of Central Forces.

The bench noted that the direction to identify sensitive areas and deployment of forces was given on Tuesday as well but no commendable steps were taken in this regard.

While the State Election Commission says it may take a few days to identify sensitive areas from law and order point of view, the court said that taking more time would only do more harm.

BJP and Congress had filed a petition
The order was passed on a petition filed by Shubhendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal. In fact, the Election Commissioner of West Bengal Rajiv Sinha had announced the schedule of Panchayat elections in a press conference on 8th June. After this, two public interest litigations were filed by the BJP and the Congress.

In this, some parts of the notification issued by the State Election Commission for the Panchayat elections were challenged. In the second petition, there was a demand to deploy the Central Force.

Regarding the election date, the court has proposed to conduct voting on July 14 instead of July 8. At the same time, the order of the High Court has also come for the Central Forces.

Violent clashes took place at many places in the state during the nomination for the Panchayat elections. On June 14, two factions of the ruling TMC clashed during the nomination of candidates at Canin in South 24 Parganas district. Both the groups attacked each other with bombs.

Earlier on June 13, there was a clash between supporters of Indian Secular Front (ISF) and Trinamool Congress. Navsad Siddiqui, ISF MLA from Bhangar in South 24 Parganas district, said that when our party workers went to file nominations, they were beaten up by TMC goons. If this situation continues, fair panchayat elections will not be held. People will not come out of the house due to fear.

Election on 8th July, results will come on 11th July
Panchayat elections will be held in West Bengal on a single day on July 8. Counting will take place on July 11. Nominations are being filed from June 9, whose last date is June 15.
