Recalling the day when she was “thrown out of the studio”, Sharon Stone said that she tried to make Barbie in the 1990s and had the then-CEO of Mattel on her side.

Long before Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie brought Barbie to life which eventually turned out to be one of the biggest entertainers of 2023, Sharon Stone pitched a movie centred on the iconic doll in the 1990s. Stone, in January, left everyone shocked when she revealed in an Instagram post that she got “laughed out of the studio” back then for pitching a story on Barbie. Now, she has dropped some new revelations about her axed Barbie movie during an appearance on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s Fly On The Wall podcast.

Recalling the day when she was “thrown out of the studio”, Sharon Stone said that she tried to make Barbie in the 1990s and had the then-CEO of Mattel on her side but the people in the studio questioned her, “Why would you take this American icon and try to destroy it? What is wrong with you?’ I got a lecture and an escort to the door.”

When asked about what she had in store for her version of Barbie, she explained how the film would’ve started if made by her at that time. Stone narrated, “We had it so the opening scene would be Barbie pulling up to Mattel in her Barbie car and secret service come out and their feet are as big as the car.” Elaborating the scene further, she added, “They escort her into Mattel and everybody falls aside because she’s the most important member of Mattel. All the big people are chasing her around and kissing her ass because she’s the queen of Mattel and it’s about the power of being Barbie.” However, the studio did not think that Barbie should be powerful.

While Stone’s revelation comes as a surprise for many, she is not the only one to pitch a Barbie-focused project. Before Greta Gerwig’s 2023 film became a pop culture phenomenon, Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway were also linked with a Sony Pictures Barbie movie. Schumer was originally roped in to play the Mattel doll. However, due to the “creative differences”, she opted out of the film. Later, Warner Bros. acquired the rights to make the film in 2018. Soon, Margot Robbie joined the project to play the lead. Gerwig, in 2021, came on board to co-write the script alongside Noah Baumbach.
