Who is Justice Sunita Agrawal, the only woman currently serving as the Chief Justice of a High Court?

New Delhi: Justice Sunita Agrawal was on Sunday sworn in as the 29th Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court. Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat administered the oath of office at a ceremony at the Raj Bhavan in Gandhinagar, which was also attended by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Gujarat Assembly Speaker Shankar Choudhary and Law and Justice Minister Rushikesh Patel.

The Supreme Court Collegium had on July 5 proposed the appointment of Justice Agarwal as the new Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court.

Justice Sunita Agrawal is currently the only woman Chief Justice of the HC

Justice Sunita Agarwal is the only woman Chief Justice of a High Court as currently there are no women Chief Justices of High Courts in the country.

She is the second woman CJ of the Gujarat High Court. Prior to her, Justice Sonia Gokani was the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court for a brief period till her retirement on February 25, 2023, after which Justice AJ Desai served as the Acting CJ.

Justice Sunita Agrawal graduated from Avadh University

Justice Sunita Agarwal was born on 30th April, 1966 and completed her graduation in Law from Avadh University in the year 1989.

He enrolled as an Advocate on 16 December 1990 and practiced on the Civil side in the Allahabad High Court.

On November 21, 2011, he was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court and later, on August 6, 2013, he was sworn in as a permanent Judge of the Allahabad High Court.
