‘Why should I bother…?’: What DK Shivakumar said on Karnataka Deputy CM post

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the 61-year-old Vokkaliga leader said, “When people have given such a huge mandate, we must be happy and fulfill the promises…”

After the Congress resolved the impasse over the chief minister’s post in Karnataka by giving the top post to veteran leader Siddaramaiah and making DK Shivakumar his deputy, the latter reacted to the development saying, “There is a long way to go.”

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the 61-year-old Vokkaliga leader said, “When people have given such a huge mandate, we must be happy and fulfill the promises. That is our main aim and agenda.”

“Why should I be worried? There is a long way to go,” Shivakumar said, news agency Year informed of.

Shivakumar was replying to a question in which he was asked whether the post of Deputy Chief Minister is a compromise and whether he is troubled by it.

Earlier he had tweeted that, “The secure future of Karnataka and the welfare of our people is our top priority, and we stand united to guarantee it.”

This comes after nearly a week of speculation over who would be Karnataka’s next leader after the grand old party won a landslide victory in the assembly elections, winning 135 of the 224 seats on May 13.

The impasse ended when the Congress said during a presser that Siddaramaiah would get the top post and DK Shivakumar would be the “sole” deputy chief minister in the southern state. The swearing-in ceremony will take place on May 20 at 12.30 pm. live update here

He also claimed that the Congress would have a stable five-year government in Karnataka and urged people not to believe in speculation and “fake news”, which he blamed on the BJP.

Shivakumar is popularly known as the troubleshooter and trusted lieutenant of the Congress, who helped the party win the highest number of seats in the political history of Karnataka.
