Woman, Daughter-in-law Arrested for Serving Tea to Dalits in Coconut Shells | Chennai News – Times of India

DHARMAPURI: Kambainallur police in Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu on Friday arrested two gounder caste women under the SC/ST Act for following the ‘twin’ tumbler system. Belonging to the vellala gounder caste, they served tea to four dalit women in coconut shells.
The arrested women have been identified as Chinnathayee, 60, and her daughter-in-law B Dharani, 32, of Marappanaickenpatty near Kambainallur.
G Selli, 50, of Polayampalayam complained to Kambainallur police on Friday that Chinnathayee and Dharani were following the ‘twin’ tumbler system. “The duo served tea in coconut shells to me and R Sripriya, V Veerammal and K Mariammal on Thursday,” Selli told TOI. She said it was not the first time that they were serving tea in coconut shells.
M Siva, 38, of Marappanaickenpatty, who is a non-dalit, said there was no ‘twin’ tumbler system in the village. “We have been living in harmony with dalits, and the issue was raised only for publicity,” he said.
Kambainallur police inspector P Kaliappan said he received the complaint on Friday. “We went to the village for an inquiry and came to know that Chinnathayee and Dharani had served tea in coconut shells to those four dalit women when they were working in the duo’s agricultural field.”
The two women were remanded in judicial custody.
