Bhubaneswar: The body of a woman was found hanging on the floor of her flat in Laxmisagar here on Friday and her husband was lying unconscious. The deceased was identified as Sanjana Periwal, 39. Her husband Sanjay Periwal, 42, a textile baron, is battling for life after allegedly consuming poison.
Prima facie, the police suspect that Sanjana hanged herself while Sanjay attempted suicide by consuming poison. Neighbors of the couple, who declined to be identified, informed the police after hearing some unusual movement from their flat.
“Before our personnel arrived, a relative of the couple had admitted Sanjana and Sanjay to a nearby hospital. Doctors declared Sanjana brought dead. Sanjay’s condition is critical,” said a senior police officer. Sources said the couple’s 12-year-old son and nine-year-old daughter had gone to school when their parents allegedly took the drastic step. The police are yet to ascertain the reason behind his suicide, although it is suspected that the incident may have been carried out due to domestic dispute.
“We are trying to ascertain the circumstances that led to this incident. Investigation is underway,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Prateek Singh.
The state has witnessed a spurt in suicide cases in the last few days, including that of BJB College student Ruchika Mohanty and Hollywood actor Raimohan Parida.
