Won’t tolerate communal disharmony in Bangladesh: Sheikh Hasina’s minister

Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said that the government will ensure strict action against those who disturb communal harmony in the country.

“No communal hatred will be allowed here. The government is determined to ensure punishment for those creating anarchy,” he said.

Khan said this in the wake of the recent attack on the Hindu community in Narail over a social media post while addressing Indian media personnel in Dhaka on Saturday.

He said Bangladesh was trying to achieve a long lasting development but was trying to eliminate a contained quarter of things.

“Today’s Bangladesh is Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib’s non-sectarian Bangladesh. We are a United Nations. There will be no communal animosity here and there will never be a chance to take root here.

“The government will take strict action against all such evils,” the home minister said, claiming that the number of minority communities, including Hindus, is increasing in Bangladesh.

The minister said that provocative activities are being done through Facebook to create communal instability. Therefore, the government has taken every possible initiative to control the use of social media including Facebook.

“A contained quarter is trying to gain by influencing the sentiments of the people. Citing a Facebook post, a malicious group tried to bring chaos. Here every religion has equal rights. We are an emotional nation,” he said.

Recently, two houses were vandalized at Shahpara in Narail district over a communal post on Facebook. Five accused have been arrested and sent on remand.
