The wrestlers left Delhi on Monday after Sunday’s clash with the police at Jantar Mantar. The police said that they had given all possible facilities to the wrestlers who were protesting for 38 days, but on Sunday these people broke the law.

Deputy Police Commissioner Suman Nalwa said – If the wrestlers ask for permission to protest next time, we will send them to another place, not Jantar Mantar. Actually, after the clash on Sunday, wrestler Sakshi had said that now he will do Satyagraha at Jantar Mantar.

Mahila Mahapanchayat was called in front of the new Parliament on Sunday. Wrestlers took out a march to go there and also broke the barricades. During this, there was also a clash with the police. After this many wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia were detained. However, he was later released as well.

Delhi Police has registered an FIR against 109 people including wrestlers. There are allegations like spreading riots, obstructing government work. There is a provision of imprisonment for up to 7 years in these sections.

Vinesh Phogat said on Monday, “When the wrestlers were going back from Delhi with their luggage, the police followed. The police told that the wrestlers have to be given security. I asked them that we were dropped from the police station at 7:30 pm on Sunday, Where were these PSOs since then. What is the need to chase. Do you want to encounter us? May be Brijbhushan has sent them in the guise of police. Everyone had weapons. May be we will encounter be given.”

What has happened so far in the strike of the wrestlers?

  • Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik along with Bajrang Punia started a dharna at Jantar Mantar on 18th January. Alleged that WFI President Brij Bhushan Singh sexually assaulted women wrestlers.
  • After the controversy escalated on January 21, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur met the wrestlers and formed a committee, but the report of the committee has not been made public till date.
  • On 23 April, the wrestlers again sat on a dharna at Jantar Mantar. He said that the strike will continue until Brij Bhushan is arrested.
  • On April 28, on the orders of the Supreme Court, in the hearing of the petition of the wrestlers, the Delhi Police registered 2 FIRs against Brij Bhushan for molestation and under the POSCO Act.
  • On the night of 3 May, there was a clash between wrestlers and policemen at Jantar Mantar. Dushyant, brother of wrestlers Rakesh Yadav and Vinesh Phogat, and 5 policemen were injured in the clash.
  • On May 7, a mahapanchayat of Khaps of Haryana, UP, Rajasthan and Punjab took place at Jantar Mantar. In this, a 15-day ultimatum was given to the Central Government for the arrest of Brij Bhushan.
  • Mahapanchayat was again held on 21st May and it was decided to hold candle march at India Gate and Mahila Mahapanchayat on 28th May at the new Parliament House.
  • On May 26, the wrestlers held a press conference and told that on May 28, they would march on foot from the protest site to the new Parliament House.
  • On May 28, when the wrestlers tried to go for the mahapanchayat in front of the new parliament building, the police took them into custody.
