Young Americans are friendlier to China

The competition between the US and China is infiltrating college dorm rooms. Citing national security concerns, at least 29 states have tiktok banned, the video app owned by ByteDance, a Chinese firm, on government equipment. Many universities have also banned the use of the app on campus WiFi by students. In practice, this means students will use data, not WiFi, to watch videos of friends revealing their outfits for peer recruitment. But youths’ surprise at the TikTok ban may also reveal how differently they view China from their parents.

recent polls from economist And YouGov shows startling differences in Americans’ views of China by age group. Roughly 25% of Americans aged 18 to 44 said they viewed China as an enemy, while nearly 52% of Americans 45 and older did (see chart). Nearly as many young Americans said they viewed China as “friendly” as those who said the country was an “enemy.” Only 4% of older Americans view China as friendly.

Young Americans were also less likely than their older peers to view Russia as an enemy, although all ages expressed more hostility toward Russia than China. This is probably due to the war in Ukraine and older Americans’ distaste for the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

Meanwhile, views of China are changing among partisans. Republicans have long been more likely than Democrats to view China as an adversary. but both parties have become more flamboyant, When Donald Trump took office in 2017, just 10% of Democrats and 20% of Republicans said they considered China an enemy. As of last week, 34% of Democrats and 48% of Republicans held this view.
