35 gates of Laxmi barrage removed, coal production disrupted due to heavy monsoon

As the water inflow into the Lakshmi (Medigadda) barrage of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) in Jayashankar Bhoopalpally district rose to 2.22 lakh cusecs, 35 crest gates of the barrage were removed on Tuesday evening.

The flow of water from the barrage at 6 pm on Tuesday was a little over 2.30 lakh cusecs. Sources said the barrage holds 9.64 tmcft of water against its gross capacity of 16.17 tmcft. With the Monsoon getting vigorous, many parts of North Telangana received moderate to heavy rains in the last 24 hours.

Eturunagaram mandal in Mulugu district recorded 71.3 mm of rain, Dahegaon mandal in Kumram Bheem Asifabad district received 63.2 mm and Gangadhara mandal in Karimnagar district recorded 68.6 mm of rain in a 24-hour period ending 8 am on Tuesday.

Overburden removal work at the Gautamkhani Opencast Project (GKOC) in Kothagudem was disrupted after heavy rains lashed the coal belt in Bhadradri Kothagudem district on Monday night, sources said.

The official machinery has been put on alert in Khammam district following the forecast of heavy to very heavy rain with gusty winds in the next 24 hours.
