Apple CEO Tim Cook video calls 20-year-old Swift Student Challenge winner

Apple CEO Tim Cook had a virtual meeting with Indore’s Asmi Jain, one of the winners of the WWDC23 Swift Student Challenge. The challenge was among students across the world to develop a native app using the Swift coding language. The 20-year-old girl developed an Eyetrack app that tracks a user’s eye movements as they try to follow a ball that moves around the screen and thus helps them strengthen their eye muscles.

Tim Cook Said the thriving iOS developer community in India has always fascinated him and 20-year-old Jain’s work is just an example of creativity.

“It was an amazing time for me to meet so many innovative people from India iOS developer community earlier this year, and Jain’s incredible work exemplifies the creativity and ingenuity on display across the country,” Cook said.

He added that Jain is “poised to make a profound impact on the world by helping people heal, and we’re excited to see what she does next.”

At Medi-Caps University in Indore, India, 20-year-old Asmi Jain learns that her friend’s uncle is to undergo brain surgery. As a result, he was left with eye misalignment and facial paralysis.

Jain swung into action, designing his winning playground to track the user’s eye movements while trying to chase a ball that moved around the screen. The playground is intended to help strengthen eye muscles, and although it was inspired by her friend’s uncle, Jain hopes it can be used by people with a variety of eye conditions and injuries.

Talking about using coding to solve problems, Jain said that “coding helps me create things that help my friends and my community”.

“It gives me a sense of independence that is very empowering,” she said.

As part of its Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple challenges students from around the world every year to develop an original app playground using the Swift coding language. The company increased the number of winners from 350 awards given in 2022 to 375 this year. Apple’s SSC 2023 Challenge saw projects from over 30 countries and regions. They covered topics ranging from healthcare, sports and entertainment to the environment.
