Assam Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) today (June 11) said that there is a possibility of heavy rains in Assam in the next five days. In a ‘Special Weather Bulletin’, the IMD’s Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) in Guwahati has issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ for Sunday and Monday, followed by an ‘Orange Alert’ from Tuesday to Thursday.

‘Yellow Alert’ means to watch and stay updated, while ‘Orange Alert’ means to be ready for action.

“Moisture infiltration very likely during next five days due to low-level south/southwesterly winds over Northeast India from Bay of Bengal.” Very likely to occur over Assam during next five days,” the RMC said in the bulletin.

Similar weather conditions are also likely to prevail over other northeastern states like Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. It further said that traffic is likely to be disrupted temporarily due to water-logging in the roads, uprooting of trees and breaking of tree branches. Uprooting of trees can cause damage to the power sector.

“Heavy rains can cause damage to standing crops and vegetables at ripening stage. People and cattle can be injured by lightning,” the report said.
