Colleges under MU fix on starting first year UG courses. Mangaluru News – Times of India

MANGALURU: Colleges running undergraduate (UG) courses under the Mangalore University (MU) are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea over starting classes for first-year students.
The university on Friday released a notification regarding admission to its UG first year courses. However, final year students will complete the course on July 15, and exams will be held for another month, making it difficult for many colleges to start a fresh batch in between due to lack of infrastructure and teaching faculty. Most colleges may wait for final year students to leave campus before starting a new batch, but the delay in the launch of the new academic year may force students to look at other options like polytechnic or paramedical courses.
“Last year, the first year classes started in the middle of the ongoing semester, and this caused a lot of inconvenience. There are not enough classes in most of the government or constituent colleges under MU. Colleges need at least 15 additional classes and teaching staff to start a new batch. It is impractical to start first-year classes when classes for the current semester are underway,” said a principal of a government-run first-class college in the city, which records good admissions.
Meanwhile, the autonomous colleges in the region have filled their seats as soon as the PU results are declared. A senior lecturer at a government first grade college said that classes for first year UG courses could start only after mid-July. Students passing PU will have to sit idle for three months.
Noting that the delay would have an impact on admissions, a lecturer said the college offers Arts, Commerce and BBA courses. Before the pandemic, the total number of admissions used to be around 160. Due to a similar delay last year, the number of seats came down to 80. Similarly, only 32 secured admissions for the commerce course, while 85-90 seats were available. , Hence, the college is planning to start the classes without waiting for the official notification, said a lecturer.
Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor PS Yadapaditya said that the MU is looking at starting UG classes in July. “We will start online classes and then shift to offline, once the final year UG degree students move out of campus. The plan will be implemented, if the colleges agree to it,” he said.
