CPI(M) has done a U-turn on UCC to please its vote bank, says Surendran

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K. Surendran alleged that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] To appease his vote bank, he took a U-turn from his previous position in favor of Uniform Civil Code.

Recalling that the CPI(M) had supported the UCC till 1990, Mr. Surendran said party leader EMS Namboodiripad had opposed the Muslim Personal Law and spoken in favor of a Uniform Civil Code applicable to all religions. “But the party has now changed its stand to please a section of conservative leaders of Muslim organisations. They are now aligning with Muslim League and Jamaat-e-Islami by opposing UCC,” he said.

On the deteriorating law and order situation in Manipur, Mr. Surendran accused the Left and United Fronts in the state of trying to mislead by portraying it as an attack on the Christian community. [by the Sangh Parivar], The violence is the result of a long-standing conflict between two ethnic groups. He said, the Church should understand that it is not under attack from the Sangh but from Muslim terrorist organizations.

He said many members of the Janata Dal (S) would join the BJP. On reports of actor and former MP Suresh Gopi getting a berth in the Union Cabinet, Mr. Surendran said no official communication has reached the state unit. “We will be happy if they are included,” he said.
