‘Dream come true for Bangladesh’s 170 million people’: PM Hasina inaugurates Padma Bridge – Times of India

Dhaka (Bangladesh): Prime Minister of Bangladesh sheikh hasina Inauguration of country’s new milestone multipurposePadma Bridge‘ on Saturday.
This is the longest bridge in Bangladesh which will significantly reduce the distance between the capital city of Dhaka Mongla sea portWhich is important for regional and international trade.
Bangladesh government told ANI, “The completion of Padma Bridge is a dream come true for 170 million people of Bangladesh. It is a unique infrastructural initiative of Bangladesh government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.”
“Our money, our bridge, our pride- Padma Bridge,” are decorated posters with slogans here in the capital.
After forming the government in 2009, PM Hasina suffered a setback when world Bank canceled a loan of $1.2 billion on grounds of corruption and canceled the loan for Padma Bridge. Although a Canadian court later dismissed the allegation, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) also scrapped the project altogether at a time when Hasina’s grip on power was weak.
“The construction was actually delayed due to false and conspiratorial allegations of corruption brought by the World Bank, which along with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Islamic Development Bank (IDB), and Japan was the main financer of the project.” Bangladesh PMO official said.
“This is a mega project of Bangladesh which is fully funded by the Government of Bangladesh. With the construction of the Padma bridge, the Government of Bangladesh has set an example for other countries in South Asia by building the bridge on its own money which is undoubtedly encouraged. Other countries should come forward to develop good regional connectivity for more such projects.”
The government said that the country’s pride is the Padma Bridge, which connects the country’s south-west region in Bangladesh with the rest of the country. The bridge has bridged the gap between Dhaka to Mongla sea port which is important for regional and international trade. Benapole land port and Pera port will also benefit from the construction of Padma bridge.
“The last major geographical barrier has been eliminated and more importantly, the backward south-west region in Bangladesh is now connected to the rest of the country. In fact, it covered 21 districts of the south-west region of Bangladesh. and connected with the rest of the country,” the Bangladesh government said.
The Padma Multipurpose Bridge has been ranked the 122nd longest in the world. The main bridge is 6.15 km long, while the railway bridge is 0.532 km long.
This bridge spans a total of 10.642 km, in which 41 pillars are connected by 42 pillars. The distance between the pillars is 150 meters with a 128 meter deep piling, which is the world’s deepest piling. The construction of the 6.15 km long bridge began in 2015, and the final period was built in December 2021.
