Apart from major crops like sugarcane and paddy, farmers in Mandya also grow horticulture crops like tomato, cucumber, brinjal, beans, mango, banana, chikoo, papaya and jackfruit on about 15-20 hectares. In addition, coconut and arecanut plantation has been done in about 55 hectares. The farmers also grow mulberry in a total of about 17 hectares. Horticulture Department Deputy Director manjunath He said that the standing horticulture crops have not been affected by the rains and added that the district has not received such rains which would cause damage to the standing horticulture crops.
During this, Karnataka Badgalapura Nagendra, state president of the state ryot union, said that while north Karnataka was facing drought, farmers were losing black gram and moong dal, while farmers feared loss of paddy. “We understand it is a natural cause. However, we request the government to compensate the farmers for the crop loss,” he said.
