The Pune Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (Pumta) had recently directed PMRDA to appoint a consultant to check the feasibility of Metro extension, connecting the two IT hubs, under the fourth phase.
Officials also decided in the Pumta meeting that MahaMetro and PMRDA would share the cost of appointing the consultant.
The firm appointed would prepare the feasibility report for another 25-kilometer long extension of the Metro service from Swargate to Khadakwasla also.
It would eventually connect to the main line in Hadapsar, connecting south Pune to the third Metro line, another PMRDA official said.
The consultant would be expected to submit the feasibility report for both the stretches within two months of its appointment. The report, expected by January, would be submitted to the state government for the project implementation.
Construction work is under way for the 23km elevated Metro line from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar. Tata Group is executing the project under the PPP model.
The stretch is expected to be operational in April 2025.
An PMRDA Metro official on Friday said they would soon start laying the tracks for the third Metro line. He said the preliminary trial of laying the tracks had commenced near the depot at Maan village.
