The FIR was lodged based on a complaint filed by Shruti’s father.Police have booked five persons for abetment of suicide. The accused include rape accused Mayur Patel, his father Arvind, mother Sharda, sister Hiteswari and a friend Balbhadra.
“As the family was occupied in last rites they had not filed a complaint initially. Now, we are working on the case to nab the accused and gather evidence,” said a police officer. “Police have started investigation and it will reveal the exact details of the crime,” Shruti’s father told TOI.
Police are yet to confirm the identity of the friend who played a key role in pressuring Shruti to strike a compromise with Mayur so that he can get bail.
Police had recovered two suicide notes, one of which was recovered in pieces from a dustbin at the boutique. In the torn suicide note, the deceased allegedly wrote, “Sorry daddy, but I am fed up with all this. They are harassing me. I was forced by Mayur’s family for bail and when bail was granted, they backed out. I told them to come home and discuss peacefully but they did not come. My life has been spoiled. Mayur’s father, mother and sister are responsible for all this, and his friend Balbhadra.”
Police lodged the FIR based on statements from the woman’s father and other family members. In the FIR the father claimed that Shruti developed friendship with Mayur over Instagram, and they started meeting. Mayur later developed physical relationship with Shruti at different locations between Nov 2022 and Nov 2023 promising marriage. Since both were from the same community, Shruti’s parents met Mayur’s parents and discussed their marriage.
However, after Nov last year, Mayur stopped meeting Shruti and refused to marry her. So Shruti lodged a rape complaint against Mayur on January 17 this year in Valsad Town police station following which Mayur was arrested and sent to jail.
