Gang Posing As Scribes To Extort Money Busted In Kashi | Varanasi News – Times of India

Varanasi: The Lanka police unit busted a gang of miscreants on Saturday who had been posing as journalists to extort money from people on highways and even from policemen, under the guise of conducting sting operations. Nine members of the gang were held in a successful operation, according to Varanasi’s DCP (crime), Chandrakant Meena.
The arrested are Mridul Kumar Tiwari, Lal Babu Sonkar, Akash Kumar Gautam, Gaurav Kumar Bharti, Prakash Sharma, Dilip Kumar, Sawan Kumar Nayak, Anil Kashyap, and Jitendra Sonkar, all of whom had been masquerading as journalists.Tiwari presented himself as the chief editor, while six others posed as cameramen and reporters. Police recovered an SUV, booms, cameras, fake ID cards of a newsgroup, three walkie-talkies, and several fake SIM cards. Meena said the initial probe revealed that the gang operated under the banner of ‘Aagaz India’, primarily targeting vehicles and policemen at various checkpoints to extort money.
