Pune Collector Bans Teachers On Poll Duty From Campaigning | Pune News – Times of India

Pune: All the officers, including teachers working on any election duty, are on deputation to the Election Commission of India (ECI), said the Pune district collector, Suhas Diwase.
School and college teachers who are deployed for election duties must refrain from election campaigns, political rallies, or any other work for contesting candidates, he said. These officers are liable for action if found participating in any activities pertaining to campaigning, he said.
All officers on election duties are directly under the purview of the ECI in all matters, according to the Representation of People Act, 1950.
The Election Commission of India is going to supervise teachers. If a complaint is received against any teacher that they are participating in a political campaign and avoiding duties, immediate action will be taken.
“So far, we have not received any such complaint, so we do not have this issue. It is, however, specially mentioned in their appointment order, and they are liable for action if found guilty,” Diwase said.
The teachers unions, however, have demanded that they not be deployed for election duties.
“As some organisations are linked with political parties, the representatives of those organisations leave school and go campaigning. Also, various parties entrust people with their work, including teachers. These teachers have been doing their duties for years without complaint. Many teachers have had no election-related work for years, and several such teachers participate in political campaigning,” Rashmi Shelar, a retired Zilla Parishad teacher, said.
