MDMK founder Vaiko recalls his party’s persistent legal efforts against Seemai Karuvelam

MDMK founder Vaiko, who fought a protracted legal battle to remove Seemai karuvelam (Prosopis juliphora), an invasive plant species from Tamil Nadu, on Friday welcomed the state’s issuance of a government order seeking ecological protection of thorny forest areas. “I welcome the decision taken by the government to remove Seemai Karuvelam and the GO issued in this regard,” Mr Vaiko said in a statement. Listing out the continuous legal efforts made by the MDMK in the fight against Seemai Karuvelam, the Rajya Sabha MP said those efforts have yielded success.

During the hearing of a batch of petitions, Additional Advocate General J Raveendran presented a copy of the GO before a full bench of Chief Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari and Justices N Sathish Kumar and N Mala.

The present policy will address the issue of reducing the highly invasive habitat along with management as well as removal of plant species in the forest areas of Tamil Nadu. First, the focus will be on the development/expansion of strategies, methodologies and protocols for the management of the most problematic weeds in forest areas.

After taking the government order on file, the judges reserved their order on a number of matters, including a case filed by Mr. Vaiko in 2015 for the abolition of Seemai Karuvelam.
