Goa and the neighboring state of Karnataka have been at loggerheads over the sharing of the river’s water for many years. Goa has often accused Karnataka of acting unilaterally in the matter by ignoring the agreement.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday said there would be no compromise on the Mahadayi issue and his government was working to save the river from diversion.

Goa and the neighboring state of Karnataka have been at loggerheads over the sharing of the river’s water for many years. Goa has often accused Karnataka of acting unilaterally in the matter by ignoring the agreement.

Opposition parties in Goa on Saturday demanded the resignation of CM Sawant over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remark that the Mahadayi river water dispute between Karnataka and Goa has been resolved.

Talking to reporters here on Monday, Sawant said Goa has a strong legal stand in the Supreme Court on the issue.

“There will be no compromise on this and the government is working to avoid diversion of Mahadayi river water,” he said.

Union Minister Amit Shah while addressing Bharatiya Janata Party’s ‘Jan Sankalp Yatra’ in Belagavi, Karnataka on Saturday said, ‘I want to tell you (people) that the BJP has created a long-standing conflict between the two states. By resolving the dispute, Mahadayi water has been given to Karnataka and farmers of many districts have benefited from it.” Opposition parties have criticized the BJP-led government for this statement.

Congress, Goa Forward Party, Aam Aadmi Party and Trinamool Congress have demanded CM Sawant’s resignation on this issue.
