Archana Singh, Hydrologist, Ground Water Department, says, “There is an urgent need to stop over-exploitation of groundwater, otherwise the situation will worsen. Rising temperature, increasing population and ever expanding city limits are the major factors affecting the groundwater level. This has resulted in a drastic drop in the ground water level in the entire region over the years.”
Today, most of the urban population of the region, especially in the newly added areas, is completely dependent on groundwater. However, he advocated that rooftop rainwater harvesting systems are the only solution to curb this menace in urban areas.
Singh claimed that recharge pits, recharge trenches, recharge wells, dry wells and ponds to collect rain water are the only solution to tackle the crisis, otherwise the situation may become difficult in the days to come. Various departments are now paying more attention to water conservation and claiming that it is their personal responsibility to restore water resources and emphasis is also being laid on spreading awareness in this regard. Ground water department officials are appealing the people to install rain water harvesting system as it is an efficient tool to restore the ground water level.
