The announcement confirms recent speculation that an episode-based show on the magical world of Hogwarts was in the works

Warner Bros. Discovery announced Wednesday that the first Harry Potter television series is to be made, with author JK Rowling serving as an executive producer.

Rowling has recently faced accusations of transphobia after she emphasized biological sex over gender identity in comments about trans women. She denies the allegation.

Warner Bros. Discovery said the series will be a “believable adaptation” of Rowling’s mega-selling books about boy wizards and will air on Max, the entertainment company’s rebranded streaming service.

The announcement confirms recent speculation that an episode-based show on the magical world of Hogwarts was in the works.

Rowling said, “Max’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being a part of this new adaptation, which takes on the depth only afforded by a long-running television series.” Will allow more details.” in a statement.

Warner Bros. Discovery stated that the stories in each book would become a “decade-long series”, featuring a new cast. No timeline was given for when the show would be filmed.

During a press conference, Max content head Casey Bloys declined to comment when asked whether Rowling’s comments about trans people would make it more difficult to find actors for the series.

The Scottish author has been plagued by threats and controversy after she publicly used the trans-inclusive phrase “menstruating people” instead of the word “women” in 2020.

“Obviously, the story of ‘Harry Potter’ is incredibly positive and positive and about love and self-acceptance. That’s our priority — what’s on the screen,” Variety quoted him as saying.

“She’s an executive producer on the show. Her insight is going to be helpful on that,” he said.

The Max streaming service combines the platforms HBO Max and Discovery Plus and will officially launch in the United States on May 23.
