Heatwave alert in Kashi, departments asked to take necessary steps. Varanasi News – Times of India

Varanasi: Yellow alert has been issued in Varanasi and surrounding districts due to continuous hot winds and rising temperature. All the departments, especially the health and veterinary department, have been asked to initiate necessary measures to meet the challenges posed by the rising mercury. Meanwhile, meteorologists have said that no major respite is expected in the next few days due to the delayed progress of monsoon.
ADM (Finance and Revenue) in view of Yellow Alert (warning of severe weather for several days) Sanjay Kumar A meeting was called with the officials of Health, Varanasi Municipal Corporation, Veterinary, Education, Panchayati Raj and Development Block on Saturday late evening. He asked the officials to initiate all necessary measures for the safety of the people especially children, elderly, physically challenged, pregnant women and laborers.
He also told the officials to intensify efforts to keep the animals safe by making proper arrangements for shade and drinking water. Kumar also asked the officials to take stock of the animal shed so that arrangements can be made to keep the animals safe in case of bad weather.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sandeep Choudhary also issued an advisory for the people. Deputy CMO Dr. SS Kanojia said that apart from do’s and don’ts, people have also been asked to take all necessary precautions. He said that all government hospitals, primary and community health centers have been equipped with facilities to meet the challenges that may arise from heat waves and extreme weather conditions.
The effect of the extreme conditions is also visible on the cremation grounds as the number of dead bodies arriving here for cremation has also increased. Gulshan Kapoor, manager of the Maha crematorium Nath temple, told that in normal condition, on an average 40-50 dead bodies reach Manikarnika Ghat every day for the last rites. But, with extreme hot weather conditions, more than 70 bodies are arriving every day for the past one week.
Pawan Chaudhary of Kashi Mokshadayini Seva Samiti said that at Harishchandra Ghat, where 20-22 bodies reach daily in normal condition, 30-35 bodies are coming for cremation every day for about a week.
However, clarifying that no death due to heat stroke has been reported in the district so far, Dr Kanojia said that in extreme weather conditions, be it summer or winter, the mortality rate, especially of people suffering from heart, blood pressure , diabetes, asthma and other diseases increase. Doctors also give the same reason for the increasing number of dead bodies at the cremation grounds.
Meanwhile, the forecasts of meteorologists are also not giving any relief to the people. Professor Rajeev Bhatla, Department of Geophysics Banaras Hindu UniversityDue to localized heating, clouds may bring some showers in the coming two or three days, but people in eastern UP will get the desired relief only with the onset of monsoon, which is delayed by almost a week. “We expect monsoon rains to occur in Varanasi and adjoining eastern UP districts after June 25,” Bhatla said.
