NEW DELHI: Islamabad high court on Monday suspended the sentence of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan in a state gift case, reported Geo News.
The court also suspended the sentence of Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi.
The high court Chief Justice Aamer Farooq said the appeal against the punishment would be fixed for hearing after the Eid holidays.
Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were sentenced to 14 years in jail in Toshakhana case by an anti-graft court in Islamabad.
The case alleges that Khan “deliberately concealed” details of the gifts he retained from the Toshaskhana, a repository where presents handed to government officials from foreign officials are kept, during his time as the prime minister and proceeds from their reported sales.
In August 2023, another court sentenced Khan to three years in prison for selling presents worth more than 140 million rupees ($501,000) in state possession and received during his 2018-2022 premiership.
The government’s list of Toshakhana gifts, made public in March last year, revealed an evident preference for wrist watches among Pakistan’s public office holders.
According to the report, Khan took away seven wrist watches valued Rs 96.6 million during his stint as prime minister, ranking second among all three parties in terms of evaluated value of watches retained.
The record shows that watches were among the most gifted items, with a total of 1,262 watches (including pocket and table watches) appearing in the Toshakhana records since 2002, the Dawn newspaper said in a report in March.
The court also suspended the sentence of Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi.
