Importance of Sengol

“Sengol” is a Tamil word derived from “semmai” and gained significance in India when the Government of India announced that the scepter would be introduced closer to the seat of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha in the new Parliament building.

The story that has become popular in recent times is that the Adhinam of Tamil Nadu gave “Sengol” to Jawaharlal Nehru to signify the transfer of power from the British to the Indians in August 1947.

It was kept in the Nehru Exhibition of the Allahabad Gallery and has been moved to Delhi for installation in the new Parliament building.

The head priest of the Madurai Adhinam (monastery) introduced PM Modi in the same fashion on Sunday.

In Tamil, the word ‘adinam’ refers to both the head of a Shaiva religious community as well as a Shaiva monastery.
