Besides this, the BJP launched a scathing attack on the Congress for including the name of its Rajya Sabha MP Imran Pratapgarhi in the star campaigner list for the Karnataka Assembly polls. The saffron party alleged that Pratapgarhi was a close associate of late gangster Atiq Ahmed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will campaign at around 20 places in poll-bound Karnataka, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Thursday as the PM Modi’s campaign schedule is being finalised.

“There is every possibility of the Prime Minister campaigning at around 20 places. In most (of these) places, he will address rally-meetings and in some, there will be road-shows”, Bommai was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. Karnataka will go to polls on May 10 and the results will be declared on May 13.

In Karnataka, the last date for filing nominations is April 20, with over 3,600 candidates filing a total of 5,102 nominations. The process of filing nomination papers began on April 13 with the issue of the election notification.

Of the total nominations, 3,327 were filed by 4,710 male candidates and 391 by 304 female candidates. A nomination has been filed by a candidate of “other gender”, the Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer’s office said in a statement on Thursday night.
