‘Miracles will happen again, all BJP candidates will win’
With voting for 10 seats in the Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) going on Monday, opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis is re-framing the BJP’s strategy to ensure a Rajya Sabha victory again. “Surely, a miracle will happen again. All BJP candidates will win.” The BJP’s victory for the sixth seat from Maharashtra in the RS polls came as a setback for the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).
Despite substantial numbers, Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Pawar lost to Dhananjay Mahadik due to lack of planning and coordination among the MVA constituents and 6-7 independent MLAs voted for the BJP. In the corridors of politics it is believed that mlc election There will be a direct contest between Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Fadnavis. For MLC elections, 11 candidates are in the fray for 10 seats.
BJP has fielded Praveen Darekar, Ram Shinde, Shrikant Bhartiya, Uma Khapre and Prasad Lad. Shiv Sena has fielded Sachin Ahir and Amsha Padvi, NCP has fielded Eknath Khadse and Ramraje Nimbalkar, Congress has fielded Chandrakant Handore and Jagtap. Each candidate needs 27 votes to win. The Shiv Sena and the NCP are confident of winning two seats on their own, but the Congress may win for one candidate while it will have to garner an additional nine votes for the other candidate.
BJP can win four seats on its own, while for the fifth candidate it will have to garner 17 additional votes. As a result, the real fight will be between Jagtap and Lad. In the RS elections, against a strength of 113, the BJP got 123 votes – then it was able to woo pro-MVA independents and get 10 additional votes.
According to a Congress leader, Shiv Sena has at least 10 surplus votes and if it casts these votes in favor of Jagtap, it should not be difficult for him to win. All eyes are on seven votes – three from the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) and two each for the MIM and Samajwadi Party (SP).
Though initially BVA and SP were with MVA, but after RS elections, they seem non-committed. Recently, council president Nimbalkar, NCP’s Eknath Khadse, and BJP’s Darekar, Lad and Girish Mahajan have called on BVA leader Hitendra Thakur to woo them. While the total strength of the House is 288, there is not one member (Ramesh Latke) and Anil Deshmukh and Nawab Malik, who are in judicial custody, have been barred from voting. Polly
