Navi Mumbai: A senior ONGC official died in a car accident near Kamothe flyover. Panvel Sunday morning around 8 am. His colleague and the car driver who was traveling with him suffered serious injuries in a pile-up of five vehicles. Five women in another car suffered injuries. Dhirendra Roy (59), a general manager at ONGC’s Panvel office, was traveling to the airport in an aggregator cab. George Mendonca reports.

Traffic was disrupted for about 45 minutes after the accident until the police pulled out the vehicles. A Karnataka state bus, which broke down at the flyover, was parked on the right side of the carriageway leading to Mumbai.
Kamothe police station assistant inspector Nilesh Dhumal said a mini-truck, which was behind the bus in the same lane, turned left to go to the middle lane, grazing two vehicles coming from behind. He said the mini-truck went ahead and rammed into the front app cab, which later rammed into a Shivneri bus in Maharashtra state. The two cars behind also rammed into the rear of the mini truck. “The cab rammed between the mini truck and the Shivneri bus, which is what people in other vehicles told us,” the police officer said.
Nailed in the middle, App cab damaged. “The doors had to be opened using metal cutters to remove the driver and two passengers.” Roy, who was declared brought dead at the hospital, was due to retire next month. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. The last rites will be performed in his hometown of Assam. Police said that the driver of the mini-truck left his vehicle and fled. A case of death due to speeding and negligent driving has been registered against him. Senior Inspector Smita Jadhav of Kamothe police station said that according to eyewitnesses, a criminal case has been registered against the absconding driver. The Shivneri bus driver can also be made an accused in the case if the investigation reveals that he is also responsible for the accident, he said.
