Mahesh Sharma remains BJP face in Noida, eyes Lok Sabha hattrick | Noida News – Times of India

NOIDA: BJP on Saturday handed Mahesh Sharma an opportunity to complete a hattrick of Lok Sabha wins, nominating him again as its candidate from Gautam Budh Nagar. Sharma was in the initial list of 51 candidates in Uttar Pradesh the party announced for the upcoming generl elections.
Speaking to TOI soon after, Sharma said over the last 10 years, since the Modi govt first came to office in 2014, Noida has witnessed “tremendous development”
“This includes the upcoming Noida International Airport in Jewar, besides several power plants, expressways and highways, and metro connectivity, among other things.The district has also attracted a lot of investment, which has strengthened the economy and opened up job avenues for people. I thank the party leadership for giving me an opportunity to serve the people again,” he said.
Born to a middle-class family in Alwar, Sharma completed his MBBS from the University College of Medical Sciences and Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi before moving to Noida where he started his political journey as a BJP worker.
He soon rose through the ranks and was fielded as a Lok Sabha candidate from Gautam Budh Nagar in 2009. He bagged nearly 2.3 lakh votes but lost to BSP’s Surendra Nagar, who garnered 2.45 lakh votes. He again contested on a BJP ticket in the 2012 assembly elections from Noida to defeat BSP’s Omdutt Sharma by a margin of 27,644 votes.
Sharma was named the party’s candidate in the 2014 Lok Sabha. This time, riding the Modi wave, he gallopped to a massive win with a 2.8 lakh margin. Samajwadi Party’s Narendra Bhati, his nearest rival got 3,19,490 votes.
Sharma was appointed minister of state (independent charge) for culture and tourism.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Sharma polled 8.3 lakh votes and defeated his nearest rival BSP’s Satveer Nagar by 3.4 lakh votes. The GB Nagar constituency comprises five assembly segments — Noida, Dadri, Jewar, Khurja and Sikandrabad. BJP is yet to announce its candidate from the Ghaziabad seat.
