Man going to yoga class dies as Merc rams into his scooter | Gurgaon News – Times of India

GURGAON: A Mercedes driver crashed his SUV into a scooter, dragging its 59-year-old rider several metres and killing him on the spot on Saturday morning.
A daily wage earner who was walking on the side of the road was injured as the SUV came to a grinding halt, hitting him. The Mercedes driver abandoned the car and fled the spot.
Police said the accident took place at in Dhobi Ghat around 5.30am.
Rakesh Verma (59), a resident of Subhash Nagar, was on his way to an ashram for a yoga session. CCTV footage shows the car, a GLS350 with a Noida registration number, striking Verma’s scooter while he tried to cross the road.
“Such was the crash that the airbags in the car opened up. The car driver, just as he managed to control his speed after dragging the scooter, got out and fled the site, leaving the car behind,” said Rajender, investigating officer and ASI at New Colony police station. Verma’s friend Hemant Kumar witnessed the crash as he was driving behind him on his own scooter.
“We were on our way to the Gita Bhavan Ashram. Just past Prem Mandir, the car hit Rakesh’s scooter from behind. The scooter was completely wrecked in the collision,” Kumar said in his complaint to police.
Kumar and another friend rushed Verma to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
A pedestrian, also named Rakesh, who belongs to Alwar, was injured while he was on his way to work. He sustained minor injuries and his condition is stable, cops said.
The IO said police have seized the SUV, which is registered in the name of a Moradabad developer.
An FIR was registered at the New Colony police station on Saturday and the unidentified driver booked under IPC sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt), 427 (causing damage amounting to over fifty rupees), and 304A (causing death by negligence).
Verma, who used to run a shop selling watches in Sector 7, is survived by his wife and two children – a son (25) and a daughter (22). He was the only earning member of the family, Kumar said.
