Mahidharpura Set For Ghees Festival | Surat News – Times of India

Surat: On Sunday, the Walled City and the alleys surrounding Mahidharpura will come alive with festivities hen people will congregate to celebrate the age-old tradition of Ghees. The event will see numerous groups joining a vibrant procession that winds through the Mahidharpura neighbourhood, accompanied by the resounding beats of drums.
The procession, a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the region, will attract hundreds of spectators eager to witness this spectacular display of tradition. The atmosphere will be electric, with the rhythmic music and the enthusiastic participation of the locals.
Ghees serves as a powerful reminder of the deep-rooted customs that have shaped the identity of this community for generations. The event not only brings together people from various parts of the area but also showcases the unity and pride they share in their common history and cultural legacy.
In most parts of the country, Holi would be a couple of days’ celebration with Holika dahan on the first day and Dhuleti, festival of colours, on the following day. But in Mahidharpura, the celebrations continue and Ghees is one of the festivities.
The city revived its age-old tradition of Ghees in 2022 after almost two decades, thanks to efforts of residents and the then city police commissioner Ajay Tomar. The attempt to revive Ghees was first made in March 2021 but due to Covid it remained a low-profile event.
Legendary Gujarati litterateur C C Mehta had described Holi, Dhuleti celebrations and Ghees in his prose ‘Bandh Gathariya’. “Within three to four days of Holi, Ghees is organised and families start preparing for it weeks in advance.”
“Families join beating drums and other musical instruments along with other Mohalla residents. They move around in the Walled City area performing loud drums up to 4am. Clowns and impersonators dressed like businessmen, doctors, lawyers, municipal officers and others also join it. They used to get cash rewards from businessmen who gathered to see the Ghees. In some areas, community-specific Ghees were also organised,” Mehta wrote in the book.
The groups that will participate in the event have started practising for the past few days. The procession starts from Daliya Sheri and moves through the narrow lanes of Mahidharpura till late night.
