Mahidharpura Traders Urged To Set Up Offices In Sdb | Surat News – Times of India

Surat: As a part of its efforts to make the Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB) operational, its committee on Thursday organized a meeting with traders in Mahidharpura.
The new SDB committee will hold a similar meeting in the Mini Bazaar of Varachha in the coming days.
The meeting was held in the parking lot of a building in the 60-year-old Mahidharpura market, the cradle of the diamond trade in the city.Even today, hundreds of offices related to the diamond trade operate in Mahidharpura’s buildings on both sides of narrow lanes. “We held meetings in Mumbai too. But we are encouraging Mahidharpura and Mini Bazaar traders to come to SDB so that offices in big numbers can be started,” said Lalji Patel, vice-chairman, SDB. “If multiple offices start, we can eliminate the apprehensions from the minds of the traders,” he added.
Attempts were made for two years to attract the Mumbai traders from the Bharat Diamond Bourse to SDB but in vain. Today, SDB, the world;s largest office, is completely vacant after Kiran Gems closed its operation and shifted to Mumbai.
The SDB committee is aiming to start 400 offices in the coming months.
“If we all start offices together, an entire ecosystem shifts. As we grew in BDB, we will all grow in SDB as well,” Govind Dholakia, chairman, SDB, told the traders.
Mathur Savani, another diamond baron, told the traders, “Till when will we continue to hold meetings in the parking lots? We proudly declare that we are diamond businesmen but if a guest wishes to come to our office in Mumbai, it’s a problem as we have limited space there.”
Among other SDB officials, Arvind Shah, president, Nagji Sakariya, and Ashesh Doshi, both vice-presidents, were present in the meeting.
