A man was arrested in Gujarat’s Surat city for allegedly exchanging precious stones worth Rs 32 lakh kept in a parcel along with gutkha packets to a diamond merchant, an official said.

Trader Rishabh Vora in his police complaint has stated that accused Raheel Manjani acted as a diamond broker and obtained polished, round and natural quality diamonds worth Rs 32,04,442 from his office on the pretext of selling them to another trader. Took them into confidence. ,

In the complaint lodged at Mahidharpara police station, the trader said the broker collected the diamonds in three sealed parcels between February 13 and February 21, 2023, and paid Rs 2 lakh to Vora as token money.

Vora said the accused then told him that he would pay the balance in three-four days.

When the payment was not made, Vora asked for his parcels and it was decided to open all the three sealed parcels in front of the broker.

However, Vora was surprised to find gutkha, chewing tobacco packets instead of diamonds in the parcel.

Vora alleged that the broker took him into confidence and conspired with another diamond merchant to cheat him by giving him gutka in lieu of diamonds.

The accused was booked under sections 420 (cheating) and 409 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code. Police said the crime is being probed and to find out if other traders were involved.
