Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee’s working president Pynshgain N Siem said the Congress is ready to work with any political party except the BJP.

As Meghalaya sees a neck-and-neck fight in the elections to be held on February 27, political parties are keeping their options open to form new alliances in the face of a hung mandate.

National People’s Party (NPP) senior leader and spokesperson Dr M Ampareen Lyngdoh said that in the post-election scenario, this is not the time to show emotion. “In the event of a post-poll scenario, I don’t think emotions will come into play, emotionally I can like or dislike a particular party looking at any parameter, but not if the numbers are clearly defined by the voters. you should expect any combination. ,” He added.

Stating that parties cannot pick and choose, he recalled the government formation in 2018 where the Congress, being the single largest party, had to sit in the opposition.

“In 2023, if it is again a fractured mandate, I do not want to say that this party will not work with that party or that party will not work with any other party, because at the end of the day, the government remains And it continues in every state. Some political equations have to be settled, and all coalition partners are equally happy with whatever setting is proposed, I don’t think individual political parties will have the privilege of saying no, we can’t work with X,Y do. Or Z,” said the NPP leader.

“I don’t think there are many parties left in the state which will have any definite number who will propose not to work with XYZ party. It is not even healthy; yes some parties will sit in small compartments. As it would not be appropriate to even talk about it, but if and when the situation arises, believe me, one would like to work closely with any government,” the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working president Pinshgain N Siem said the Congress is ready to work with any political party except the BJP.

Stating that political parties have differences with each other, Siam said, “The Congress is in a very neutral position where it can work with any other party, even with the NPP, but Not with BJP.”

He also pointed out that in a coalition government, the smaller party is more powerful than the larger party as it will play an important role in forming the government.

“We are open to all, even NPP, but not BJP,” he said. In a coalition government the smaller party is more powerful than the bigger party as they cannot form the government without the support of the smaller parties,” he said.

The Congress leader also predicted that a 2018-like situation could emerge after the elections.

Interestingly, the United Democratic Party, which is likely to play the role of ‘King Maker’ in the formation of the new government, has kept mum and has not shown any ‘favouritism’ towards any political party.

However, both the NPP and the Trinamool Congress have not fielded any candidate against UDP chief Metbah Lyngdoh.

Meghalaya will go to polls on February 27 and the counting of votes will take place on March 2.

In 2018, the Congress emerged as the single largest party but failed to secure a majority in the 60-member assembly. The BJP, which won only 2 seats, joined hands with the National People’s Party (NPP) to form the government in the state. But this time, NPP supremo and chief minister Conrad Sangma announced that his party would go it alone in the 2023 elections. The Trinamool Congress, which failed to open its account in the last election, is also trying to make inroads in Meghalaya under the leadership of former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.
