MMRDA finalizes Thane to Borivali tunnel contractor. Mumbai News – Times of India

MUMBAI: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on Friday finalized a contractor for the Thane-Borivali underground tunnel, which will drastically cut travel time from Ghodbunder Road to the Western Express Highway.
Apart from reducing the congestion on Ghodbunder road, the tunnel will reduce the travel time between Thane and WEH by 10 minutes. MMRDA has issued the letter of acceptance to Megha Engineering & Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) for the construction of this 11.85km corridor, which will cost Rs 14,400 crore. Field. It approached the High Court against the MMRDA order but the case was dismissed. The tunnel will pass through the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The proposed alignment for this corridor will start from Tiku-Ji-Ni Wadi (Thane) and terminate at Ekta Nagar on WEH (Borivali).
The tube tunnel will be provided with inter-connections so that breakdown vehicles can be pulled from either side of the tunnel, which will have 2+2 lanes except the evacuation lane. The distance saving due to this corridor between Thane to Borivali will be about 13 km. Those traveling by JVLR can also go through this tunnel. The existing alignment connects Thane and Borivali to Ghodbunder with a length of 23 km. Currently, it takes around one to two hours to travel between these two points, depending on the traffic density. The tunnel will have fire extinguishers/water pipes, smoke detectors at intervals inside the tunnels.
