Nepal-China diplomatic consultations: China promotes GDI after Nepal’s silence on BRI – Times of India

Beijing: The 15th meeting of the Foreign Secretary-level bilateral diplomatic consultation mechanism between Nepal and China was held at the Chinese Foreign Ministry in Beijing on Friday.
Pardafas informed that the meeting concluded with emphasis on timely implementation of Chinese investment projects, silence on BRI and discussion on GDI.

The statement issued by the embassy does not mention whether the issue of BRI was discussed or not. It was noted that both sides agreed to expeditiously implement Chinese aid projects in Nepal.
Pardafas said that economic partnership, trade promotion, investment and tourism, contact building, agriculture, education, cultural and people-to-people relations between the two countries were discussed during the five-hour meeting.
In the meeting, the Nepali delegation was led by Foreign Secretary Bharatraj Paudyal and the Chinese delegation was led by Sun Weidong, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs. The meeting was attended by Ambassador Shrestha, Lok Bahadur Thapa, Joint Secretary, Department of External Affairs, North East.
In the meeting, the Chinese Vice Minister expressed satisfaction that Nepal’s consistent stand on the One China policy and the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence is being respected. Pardafas reported that Foreign Secretary Paudyal reiterated Nepal’s stand towards the One China policy.
Foreign Secretary Paudyal commended the Chinese policy of always non-intervention and respecting Nepal’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence. The meeting between the two sides reviewed all aspects of Nepal-China relations and issues of cooperation, a statement issued by the Nepalese Embassy said. The issue of continuation of exchange of visits between the two countries was also discussed.
“It was agreed in the meeting that various infrastructure development projects being built with the help of Chinese grants and projects contracted by the Chinese should be completed on time,” said a statement issued after the meeting.
Foreign Secretary Paudyal offered to help Nepal export primary products to China to reduce Nepal’s trade deficit with China. He urged to create an environment for export of tea, coffee, herbs, buffalo meat and agricultural products to China. The Chinese side has responded positively.
The Chinese Vice Minister also promised to encourage Chinese investors to invest in Nepal in areas of mutual interest. Foreign Secretary Paudyal praised China for including Nepal in the list of overseas destinations for group tours.
“The two sides also discussed promoting public relations and cultural cooperation, increasing the number of scholarships for Nepali students and professionals in China, enhancing the capacity of technical experts from Nepal,” the Nepalese embassy statement said.
In the meeting, the two countries also agreed to cooperate in the United Nations and multilateral fora and support each other’s candidature. They also discussed other issues, including cooperation in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
