New Traffic Mgmt System: Addl Personnel Deployed As Airport Braces For Monday Test | Kolkata News – Times of India

Kolkata: A challenge awaits airport authorities on Monday, as Bidhannagar City Police reduced the number of policemen and removed traffic signage from outside the Kolkata airport terminal to allow the airport authorities to manage traffic outside the terminal building instead. The cops’ role has been limited to the management of the Yatri Sathi taxi kiosks for a week from Saturday as the airport parking agency takes over lane and traffic management.
TOI had written on Saturday how, as part of an experimental measure, the airport authorities agreed to a proposal by Bidhannagar City Police and handed over traffic management and fine collection duties to the car parking agency. The change took place due to a disagreement between the airport authorities and Bidhannagar City Police over collection of traffic fines outside the airport terminal, including penalizing vehicles stationed at the zebra crossing as it hampered the revenues of the airport. The cops then proposed that the airport authorities take over the lane management exercise for a week, during which police will only be stationed outside the terminal and help when asked to do so.

New traffic mgmt system: Addl personnel deployed as airport braces for Monday test

“It’s an experimental measure and airport authorities are trying to take over the traffic management duty. We are assisting them by overseeing it from a distance. In case an issue arises, we will certainly assist them,” said a Bidhannagar City Police officer.
On Saturday and Sunday mornings, the airport authorities had not faced much of a challenge. However, in the evenings, traffic congestion developed with many cars illegally parking outside the terminal.
Both airport authorities and cops feel that the real test will begin on Monday when the volume of passengers and flights will go up.
“We deployed additional men. At least four persons have been dedicated to manage the lanes but we know the real hurdle will start on Monday when the number of flights and the rush of passengers will increase,” said Raju P R, a senior official of Omega Enterprises, the parking agency.
