Police release photo of University of Michigan shooting suspect

Three people were killed and five others were injured before a gunman opened fire on a university campus in the United States on Monday, according to police. Suspect opened fire inside a building Michigan State University (MSU) shortly after 8 p.m. (local time), said Chris Roseman, interim deputy chief of campus police. They later released the first photos and information about the suspect who is believed to have opened fire inside two buildings in the complex.

Posting the images on Twitter, MSU Police and Public Safety said, “Suspect Photos: Suspect is a black male, of short stature, wearing red shoes, jean jacket, a baseball cap with a light brim.” Navy.”

The assailant was last seen leaving the MSU Union Building on the north side of the building shortly after the shooting.

In further update, police said on Twitter that the suspect was located off campus. “It appears that he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. There is no longer a threat to the campus and the shelter has been lifted.”

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was informed of the shooting and said police were working to secure the area.

“Let’s wrap our arms around the Spartan community tonight,” she wrote on Twitter, referring to the university’s athletic logo.

School and university shootings are alarmingly common as part of a wider wave of gun violence in the United States, where the prevalence of firearms has increased in recent years.
