PM Shehbaz Sharif hits out at opposition for pushing Pakistan towards ‘destruction’

by Press Trust of India: Description of the former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his party as “liars”, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday slammed the opposition for pushing the cash-strapped country towards “destruction”.

Addressing the federal cabinet on the day Khan appeared before the Islamabad High Court (IHC) for bail in a corruption case, Sharif criticized the jailing of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party leaders. Questioned the silence of the courts. Khan’s tenure

The Prime Minister termed as false the claim of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party chief that his government was toppled due to a US-backed conspiracy.

PML-N chairman Sharif said PTI chairman Khan and his party were “liars” and were pushing Pakistan towards “destruction”.

He insisted that more than one National Security Committee has declared Khan’s allegations to be false.

Sharif also pointed to the poor economic condition of the country.

Pakistani media quoted Sharif as saying, “The currency is passing through difficult times, and the challenges we have inherited are contributing significantly to the worsening of the situation.”

His remarks came in the wake of extensive Khan’s arrest triggered protests On Tuesday from the IHC where he appeared for the hearing in the corruption case.

Sharif lamented the violent protests and said such scenes had not been seen since the fall of Dhaka decades ago.

He recalled that there had been protests after the death of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, but none “moved towards military installations”.

Sharif said that the PTI protesters insulted the martyrs of the country in a way that even our enemies did not do.

“Attacks on military installations… there cannot be a bigger form of terrorism in the country,” he said.

He claimed that Khan’s government violated an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the current coalition government was attempting to rectify it.

Pakistan, currently facing a major economic crisis, is grappling with high foreign debt, weak local currency and dwindling foreign exchange reserves.

For the first time in the country’s history, the US dollar on Thursday touched the barrier of Rs 300 against the local currency in the interbank as well as in the open market.
