Samanata Mandir Will Have Idols Of Those Who Advocated Social Equality | Hubballi News – Times of India

Gadag: In a distinctive move, a committee in Gadag is pioneering the establishment of a temple of equality that will feature statues of not only Ram but also Buddha, Basava, Shishunala Sharief, and Ambedkar.
Spanning two acres of land, the proposed Samanata Mandir aims to commemorate these five great souls who advocated for social equality and humanity. Samanateya Mandir Pratishthana (Trust) Samiti installed the statues at a member’s residence on Ambedkar Jayanti. This initiative is touted as a unique project in the nation.
On Sunday, a mega procession involving people of all castes and creeds and folklore teams was started from Tontadarya Mutt and concluded in the evening in the presence of Tontada Siddharam Mahaswamiji of Tontadarya Math, Dambal-Gadag, amid chanting of vachanas.
Books of the Indian Constitution, the Bhagavadgita, the Quran, and the Bible were kept alongside the idols. Swamiji said that unity and sovereignty are the gist of Indians and Ambedkar’s constitution is like a handbook to maintain pluralism in the country.
“Ambedkar’s philosophies imbibe the values of all religions. It is a model to spread messages of Gita, Quran and Bible to commoners at a single temple with the constitutional teachings of equality and harmony,” he commented.
Anil P Menasinakai and Chandsab Kottur, convenors of the Samiti, told TOI that Isri family and Veerashaiva community members of Kurtakoti village came forward offering land of two acres.
“This idea was coined four months ago. Construction of the temple will start after the Lok Sabha election, and it will be based on crowdfunding from people who wish to uphold equality and humanity. Once the temple is read, we will ensure that the Indian Constitution will be read out there daily followed by the teachings of Ram, Buddha, Basava and Sharief” they stated.
Other convenors Vasant Padagad, Chandrashekhar Harijan and Paramesh Nayak noted that the Gadag people have been living in harmony and love for centuries. “Now we are setting a model for the nation by bringing disciples of Ram, Bhim, Sharief, Buddha and Basava together on a common platform. We have contacted many scholars of respective schools of thought and many more will be contacted in the coming days” they added.
