The NIA had arrested Bellare in connection with the Netru murder case in November last year during raids at five places in the state, including Dakshina Kannada.
SDPI Dakshina Kannada district general secretary Anwar Sadath Bajthoor told TOI that the party had plans to field Shafi Belare from Puttur.
However, he added, an official announcement in this regard was yet to be made.
This announcement was made while addressing the party workers. The party may make an official announcement regarding the candidature of Shafi Bellare through a press briefing within two-three days. SDPI will contest elections in all assembly constituencies of Dakshina Kannada district.
It may be noted that on January 20, the NIA had filed a charge sheet against 20 accused, including Bellare, in the Special NIA Court, Bengaluru, in connection with the Netru murder case.
The charge sheet has been filed against the accused under various sections 120B, 153A, 302 and 34 of the IPC and sections 16, 18 and 20 of the UA(P) Act, section 25(1)(a) of the Arms Act.
On July 26, 2022, activists of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) allegedly killed Praveen Netru, a resident of Bellary, and a BJP worker with a sharp weapon.
