With the largest number of students among state-run schools, the Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Kadhirakamm is finally set to receive a much-needed upgrade of its sports and other infrastructure.

Apart from sports infrastructure, the school will also see a facelift after being in a dilapidated condition for a long time. “We are demanding upgradation of sports facilities as students were showing a lot of interest. Now, the government has decided to build an indoor stadium and a basketball court. The facility can be used by many other government school students and sports enthusiasts,” said a teacher.

He said that an indoor stadium would be built in front of the open ground and a basketball court would be built at the rear of the complex. He said that a multi-purpose auditorium has already been constructed.

“More than anything, the students and teachers were horrified by the dilapidated condition of the portico of the school, waiting to collapse at any moment. The old facade has been demolished recently. The portico has also been redesigned Will be given,” said another teacher.

The teacher said that the Indira Gandhi Arts and Science College, which was functioning in the school premises till now, has been shifted to the Indira Nagar Government Higher Secondary School.

“This will give us more room to improve facilities for the students and enhance the infrastructure. There are around 1,200 students studying in the school and hence there is scope to improve the infrastructure.

A Tiruchi-based NGO, in collaboration with Bharat Petroleum, has come forward to construct toilet blocks to meet the sanitation needs of the school. A parent said that this was one of the long pending demands of the students for more toilets.

The government has announced its plan for infrastructure development in schools in this year’s annual budget. Under ‘Prime Minister’s School for Rising India’, the regional administration has selected 12 schools for infrastructure development. Facilities will be improved with a grant of ₹2 crore to each school.
