Steps being taken to increase milk production: Minister

Milk and Dairy Development Minister Mano Thangaraj on Tuesday inspected Aavin milk production unit and ice cream unit in Madurai and handed over welfare assistance of Rs 55.37 lakh to 154 beneficiaries.

Addressing the media persons, Shri Mano Thangaraj said that steps are being taken to increase milk production and ensure fair and remunerative prices to milk producers. Its objective was to provide quality milk and milk products to the public at reasonable prices.

At present, Aavin was handling around 40 to 45 lakh liters of milk a day across the state and it would be gradually increased to 70 lakh litres. Regular monitoring of the working of the production units was being done with provision of adequate infrastructure.

Milk production was declining all over the country. Various measures and schemes are being implemented to increase milk production. For this, loan, insurance and incentives were being given.

Aavin was also producing milk based products like curd, buttermilk, ghee, palkova, ice cream, which were well received by the public. He said that the production of milk products has increased by 10 percent in the current year due to the demand.

Asked about delay in supply of milk and milk products at some places, the minister said steps are being taken to ensure timely supply, for which manpower will be augmented.

He said that the demand of dairy farmers to increase the purchase price of milk would be considered and a decision would be taken.

Aavin Managing Director S. Vineeth, Collector MS Sangeetha, General Manager of Aavin Madurai Peace and other officers were present.
