Expansion

Once again, the people of India have hoisted their flag in America. This time Indian-origin Pramila Jayapal has been named the ranking member of the powerful House Judiciary Committee panel on immigration. She became the first immigrant to lead the subcommittee.

Pramila Jayapal, 57, represents Washington’s 7th Congressional District. She replaced Jo Lofgren, a female member of the Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security and Enforcement. After being named ranking member, Pramila Jayapal said, “I am honored to be the first South Asian woman elected to the US House of Representatives.

Got American citizenship after 17 years

Pramila said, she came to America only when she was 16 years old. However, he had to wait 17 years to become an American citizen. “It’s a big deal for me to be in a position where I’ll be taking on the role of rebuilding a broken immigration system,” she said.

Fighting for immigrants for a long time

Pramila has been fighting for immigrants for a long time before coming to the US Congress. He also started One America (formerly Hate Free Zone), Washington’s largest immigrant organization. He formed it after the September 11 terrorist attacks. He has also been given the Champion of Change award by former President Obama.
