Winter ice cream business nearing summer levels – Times of India

Are people consuming ice cream in excess in winter? Ice cream makers say that while the summer months still dominate sales, the seasonal difference between warmer and cooler months is narrowing. Typically, sales fall sharply during the winter months due to seasonality and a decrease in the number of consumers stepping out of their homes. While out-of-home consumption is important to ice cream sales, what is also driving revenue is in-home consumption due to instant commerce.
The first six months of the financial year typically account for 60% of annual sales, or even more for some brands. Gravis Foods (Baskin RobbinsCEO Mohit Khattar That said, over the years, the company has been seeing relatively strong performance in the winter months (or the second half of the fiscal year). “The contribution for the second half of the financial year is now up from 40% to about 47% of annual sales. Given the strong growth we are seeing, our average sales in the winter months are almost at the same level as sales in the summer months. in the 2019-20 (pre-Covid) period,” Khattar said.
Experts say that the trend of eating ice cream in the off-season will be no different for other players.
President of Indian Dairy Federation RS Sodhi said, “Seasonal variation in ice cream consumption is definitely decreasing and one of the main reasons for this is that personal consumption of ice cream at home has increased due to e-commerce and instant commerce. Additionally, there is a wider choice of flavors today than there were a decade ago.”
However, Sodhi said the seasonal variation in the north would still be wider than in other regions. “If the ratio of consumption between peak seasonal months of winter and peak summer in the north is 1:5, it will be 1:2 in other regions,” Sodhi Said.
Baskin Robbins is the second largest QSR brand in India with around 850 stores. AmulThe ice cream giant, recently said that it plans to launch 100 ice cream parlors in the country, which will offer premium ice cream flavours.
At the industry level, ice cream is growing at about 17%, Khattar said, with Baskin Robbins growing at a faster pace than the industry. The key drivers of growth, he said, are Gen-Z. “Earlier, ice cream was a relatively rewarding category. This behavior is changing now. People like to celebrate their small joys with ice cream. Today, there are many opportunities for people to consume ice cream, be it bi Be it binge watching movies or going out with friends at the multiplex or any other reason. Sometimes, you see a surge in consumption. This year on Women’s Day, we saw a sudden increase in sales,” said Khattar.
A closer look at the Women’s Day data revealed that most of the growth was confined to metro cities and select products such as festive ice cream cakes. Mumbai led the chart with a growth of over 50% from the same day’s sales a week ago. Cities like Bangalore and Delhi also performed well. Kolkata was clearly behind with an increase of 25%.
